Stephen C. Sanders, Wednesday September, 28, 2011, 3am. When the stars start falling- Erev Rosh HaShanah
Certainly these are classic song lyrics. It had been quite some time since I have loosened up on my own self imposed restrictions for these websites that I produce.
One might well imagine that it could be difficult to be gifted with a keen intellect that always attempts to put a rational explanation onto everything. Some things just never seem to work out perfectly. Now when you just happen to have been born with an intense interest in science, and even biology at a very young age, well then its certainly going to be a very rough ride to sit around and listen to all sorts of conjecture centered in dogmatic discussion.
Now quite honestly the only way I could ever truly endure listening to such discussion was to simply turn off my brain for a little while.
Now as dramatic as that may sound, in fact it is really not that difficult. The problem of course only ever comes up when you try to penetrate to the deepest meaning within a particular thing. So rather than starting with something really complex, lets just open it up with a simple question.
What does the lyrics:
I’ll Be With You When The Stars Start Falling.
Its a great song and as song it evokes all sorts of sentiments or emotions. Is it simply a love song?
It’s getting near dawn,
When lights close their tired eyes.
I’ll soon be with you my love,
To give you my dawn surprise.
I’ll be with you darling soon,
I’ll be with you when the stars start falling.
[Chorus:]
I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love.
I’m with you my love,
The light’s shining through on you.
Yes, I’m with you my love,
It’s the morning and just we two.
I’ll stay with you darling now,
I’ll stay with you till my seas are dried up.
[Chorus]
[Repeat Second Verse]
I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love.
As much as one tries to reduce a complex concept into its fundamental elements, there is simply no getting around the idea that a song with its rhythm, chorus, and all its various elements is clearly far greater than the sum of it’s parts.
The branch of psychology that dealt with this is known as gestalt, and I happened to have read a book entitled “In And Out Of The Garbage Pail” by Fritz S. Perls.” and the amazing thing about my mind, was that I had the whole footnote down except for one letter. I had thought the last name was spelled with an “a”. So what I imagine the voices of my tireless critics coming to mind.
So what indeed, right back at you. Being blessed with a beautiful mind is not necessarily always an asset. As a matter of fact I recall writing some of my very own self styled treatises on the very concept of “Getting caught in the analytical”. While it may seem like I have conveniently left behind my very own concept, the truth is that I have not done so.
Unfortunately when considers the movie “A Beautiful Mind” Russell Crowe is the name that comes to mind rather than the “true inspiration” behind the movie. John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics, had come up with a mathematic concept that had extensive applications in many areas.
Rather than to go on and try to explain this concept that earned John Nash such incredible esteem and honor, I decided to share an excerpt from:
“…after continuing in chemistry for a while I encountered difficulties with quantitative analysis where it was not a matter of how well one could think and understand or learn facts but of how well one could handle a pipette and perform a titration in the laboratory.”
From Les Prix Nobel. The Nobel Prizes 1994, Editor Tore Frängsmyr, [Nobel Foundation], Stockholm, 1995
This autobiography/biography was written at the time of the award and later published in the book series Les Prix Nobel/Nobel Lectures. The information is sometimes updated with an addendum submitted by the Laureate
I must admit that I was hoping to find something more definitive in the piece written by the Nobel Prize winning mathematician John Nash, himself, but rather much to my dismay I found a fair amount of detail relating to his mental illness which was shown in a fair amount of detail in the movie.
Also, unfortunately I found a rather bold display off a full copyright statement, so therefore I have been warned that simply may not use John Nash’s own words as the centerpiece for this essay. So, I will include all the necessary and proper citations, as a matter of good housekeeping, and will discharge my duties as a an author in my own right with this: Several lines for this article were the words of John Nash himself an its source is cited below: TO CITE THIS PAGE:MLA style: “John F. Nash, Jr. – Autobiography”. One aspect of this is that rationality of thought imposes a limit on a person’s concept of his relation to the cosmos.
Nobel Prize.org John Nash- Autobiography
A different sort of author would have happily ended this piece with John Nash’s own words. After all if such a gifted and beautiful mind the achieved such a high honor as being given The Nobel Prize, then what more sense could anyone make of such concepts of the “temporary nature” of the cosmos”. If utilizing only one small segment of our collective mindswhich our esteemed Nobel Prize winner has noted, is a limitation? Then by what other method other than, rational thoughtcould we possibly use to unravel the complex questions, which scientists constantly try to answer.
To complete the answer, at least to my original question, regarding the stars start falling, we need to allow for a little more flexibility. An epic song, if my critics will allow that phrase to be applied to rock music, may have the word “love” in it, however I have always felt, that such songs, imply a deep heartfelt love for something, something which as John Nash’s own words above have also described.
Well, I pressed on to find out more about Nash’s work and research. I thought that I had understood the concept which using whatever little of the movie I may stii retain regarding the mathematical theories. It was kind of along these lines:
When you observe the behavior of social insects like ants, for example, one would be hard pressed to explain altruistic behavior on the part of worker ant for example.
The Hellstrom Chronicle a 1971 movie mostly about insects, shows how individual ants will sacrifice for their own lives so that others (or the entire colony) might survive. Delving further into pop culture, who could forget the words of Spock, when stating, “that the needs of the many are more important than the needs of the few.”
The problem is that we, a small colony of theoretically enlightened people, living on a small planet, do not seem to embrace this same concept that a seemingly simple creature, an ant would live by. Until enough of us finally realize how interconnected we all truly are, then its hard to imagine that are civilization will still be here, when our star falls.
